Dual Track Career Path

The Dual Track Career Path program from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) enhances continuity, stability, and accountability in the L.A. County correctional system and patrol-related functions.

The Dual Track allows sworn personnel to select, remain, and promote within their career path of choice: custody, patrol, or both. As you consider a law enforcement career with our Department, you have the opportunity to join one of the finest law enforcement agencies in the world.

LASD is the second-largest policing agency in the United States, while our nine facilities make up the largest correctional system in the nation. Our patrol stations and various substations provide quality law enforcement services to the residents of L.A. County from Catalina Island to the Antelope Valley.

Upon completing initial assignments in the Custody and/or Field Operations Divisions, Deputies may seek positions in a variety of specialized assignments, such as Special Enforcement Bureau, Arson Explosives Detail, Canine Services, and many more. Deputy Sheriffs may choose from more than 350 job classifications and assignments throughout their careers.

When applicants complete the Deputy Sheriff Trainee employment application, they will be asked to select the career path of their choice. The applicant’s career path selection at this time is not binding. Upon graduation from the Sheriff’s academy, new Deputies will be assigned to a custody or patrol position, depending on the needs of the Department. Once Deputies complete their probationary period, they can re-evaluate their career path selection again.

Deputies who select a career path in custody will remain in Custody Division until they elect to change their career path. Deputies who select a career path in patrol, and become patrol-certified, can transfer throughout the Department.

The hiring process, selection requirements, academy curriculum, and monthly entry-level salary will remain unchanged. Deputies who elect a career path in patrol, become patrol-certified, and serve the required number of years, will be eligible to receive additional pay.
